Theater Review: Imagine’s Charming, Kinetic ‘Memphis’
"Joe DiPietro (book and lyrics) and David Bryan’s (music and lyrics)’s hit Broadway fantasia about the early days of rock and roll, Memphis: The Musical, comes to Imagine Productions in a high-flying, potent production directed and music directed by Tirzah Washington (with Luke Bovenizer as assistant director).
Memphis focuses on the intertwining story of Huey (Will Stewart) an illiterate white man with emotional problems living with his widowed mother Gladys (Erika Pearsol) who’s fallen in love with Black music (principally R&B though jazz gets mentioned) to the extent of getting fired from his department store job, and Felicia (Ariyah Wallace) who sings in her brother Delray’s (Tyrell Reggins) club, also populated by Bobby (Marshawn Clodfelter) and Gator (Khordel Jackson). That love of the music turns into a surprise-hit radio DJ spot for Huey under the money-hungry and morally flexible Mr. Simmons (Jensen Bullard) and a love between Huey and Felicia to the consternation of their family members and white Memphis society."
